What is the best age for newborn photos?

This is a question I am often asked.

Typically, the best age for newborn photos is within the first 14 days after birth. The reason for this is that your baby is generally very sleepy and still flexible enough to move easily into those tiny, cute little poses that you see. Usually around the two week mark, baby acne and colic usually appears and we want to avoid having to balance that if we can help it. Although some babies never experience these things at all.

However, it is not always possible to bring baby for a newborn session immediately following birth, especially if they had an extended hospital stay. So what I tend to allow is up to 8 days for the baby photos to take place.

The best thing to do is pre-book your session with you due date, after your 20 week scan. I only take a certain amount of due dates per month, as this will allow room in my diary should baby arrive early or late. Babies always arrive when they want (unless you are having a scheduled c-section), and I always try to ensure I capture them within that first 2 weeks of being born.

If your baby ends up arriving prematurely and is required to stay in the NICU for a while, then not to worry as we can just plan for the session after your baby goes home. I have photographed premature babies up to the age of 10 weeks old and they have been just as sleepy as a 7 day old newborn. The main goal of the session is to get beautiful newborn photos that you will cherish for a lifetime.
